The harvesting of watermelons was photographed on the front page. Employees for Sorrells Farms and Stephens Farm were pictured bringing in this year’s watermelon crop with the melons from Stephens Farms being shipped throughout the state and nationwide. Kinley Sorrells, owner of Sorrells Farms, said this has been one of the hardest years to bring in the harvest with the amount of rain and cool weather.

Several topics were discussed at the De Leon City Council meeting. The Council rejected the idea that the City Administrator should have the power to award bids on his own. Council member Terry Scott said the best way to keep council control was to not allow the position of the City Administrator to make important decision on his own. The Council tabled a discussion about the solar powered carport for the Police Department.

The Hamilton County Junior Livestock Association rejected the City of Hamilton’s lease agreement for Fair Park. They asked to meet with representatives of Hamilton’s board to discuss other resolutions. The HCJLA released a written statement saying they rejected the council’s contract in its current form. The contract was up for discussion at last month’s city council meeting, however there was scheduling issues between the HCJLA and the Heritage Day organizers.
Hico News Review
The 134th Old Settlers Reunion took place over the weekend and was kicked off with a parade on Thursday. The winners of the Miss Hico Pageant will be in the following edition. The festival was postponed last year because of COVID -19. The celebration was Thursday through Saturday with events like karaoke, carnival, petting zoo and live music from local musicians as well as vendors for shoppers.
