Dublin coffee shop, Blackjack’s, has expanded and opened King Coffee in downtown Stephenville offering a large space and an expanded menu.
The new eatery owned by Chelsea and Lance Battenfi eld and Joseph Borges is located at 200 West Washington in the old Rexall building right across from the county courthouse in downtown Stephenville.
Hosting their grand opening on July 4, the large coffee shop showcased a variety of expanded menu offerings while offering patrons their same favorite foods and beverages.
When asked what led them to open the new shop, manager Sarah Ground said the Lord led them in the expansion, not unlike Blackjack’s and the Lingleville Country Store.
“We looked at another small space and it just didn’t fit,” Ground said.
The owners were prompted to look into the space after Chelsea had a dream last year where they owned a coffee shop in downtown Stephenville and her vehicle had bumper stickers of a fan (Lingleville Country Store’s logo), a Blackjack and a Crown (for King Coffee).
“Rexall means ‘King of all,’” Ground said. “There are just too many things leading us this way, not to do it.”
“I follow the Lord’s prompting in all things,” Lance said.
Since the building was formerly the old pharmacy, the owners decided to try to keep a part of that vibe by utilizing showcasing local items including Veldhuizen cheese, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Armagh Creamery yogurt and Dublin Bottling Works soda.
“We wanted it as local as possible,” Ground said. The eatery will have Dublin Bottling Works soda on tap.
Those wanting to try King’s food are invited to start with a variety of bases including a sandwich, a bagel, a wrap, flatbread, a salad or a loaded avocado.
“We are trying to offer more gluten free options,” the manager said.
The biggest change, however, is simply the space that King Coffee encompasses.
“We’re happy that all we’ve dreamed of can finally come true,” she said. “This feels like home.”
Part of those dreams include the opportunity to host live music and other events, and offering a large conference table so people can meet inside the coffee shop.
“Everyone is so excited for us. Even the city has been so welcoming,” she said.
As part of the King Coffee experience, Lance said they are looking forward to getting the community excited about products that they know and love.
“This is another chance to love people well,” he said.
With the expanded menu, tea beverages have also been extended.
“We have the best matcha you have ever tasted,” Lance said. “It’s amazing and tastes a little more refi ned.”
One tea beverage that has been added is the Magic Tea Lemonade, showcasing a layered brightly colored drink that kids seem to especially love. The drink layers lemonade, butterfly pea flower powder and matcha tea.
Another interesting drink being offered is Blue Dalgano.
Lance explained that there are only three foods that can be whipped into foam: dairy (such as cream or milk), egg whites (how meringue is made) and coffee.
Dalgano coffee combines sugar, coffee, water to make a foamy coffee substance that is then served over milk. In King’s drink, the milk is blue.
Some of the more elaborate drinks on the menu are marked with an ‘S’ indicating slow, or an extended amount of time to make them.
Along with King Coffee, the owners will continue to operate Blackjack’s and Lingleville Country Store.
