Special to the Citizen The Dublin Garden Club held its January meeting in the home of Edilsia Jimenez with guest speaker Whit Weems.
Whit is with the Texas Fa rm Bureau headquartered out of Waco. He is responsible for furthering education and protection of farmland in local rural areas. A main focus of education is outreach for schools and teachers, also, providing educational opportunities for libraries.
The club was provided with educational books for children on growing a garden. The Texas Farm Bureau produces these books in-house. It is a wonderful guide for elements of gardening. It includes the different aspects for growing plants beginning and ending with the soil. Also provided were seeds, containers and soil that they use for hands on for the children.
The club decided they will sponsor a day of hands on education with help from Texas Farm Bureau at the library. Librarian Adina Dunn will schedule during spring break. The focus will be ages 4 through 8 years of age. The children will receive the book and will plant a seed they can take home and watch grow. We also hope to let the children plant seeds in the vegetable gardens at the library.
This will educate them on the difference in planting in a starter cup versus direct in garden soil.
The Dublin Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of each month and has a guest speaker at each meeting. If you would like to join them, contact President Mary Howard at 254-977-3686 for more information.
