The Dublin Garden Club kicked off our fall meetings Sept. 9th at the Dublin Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. It was great to see everyone again after our summer break. We want to thank the Church of Christ for always being generous and supportive of our organization.
Our guest speaker was Master Naturalist, Peggy Tolboom. Peggy’s presentation was about feeding birds in the winter. Different birds have different needs to stay healthy during the winter time. Some birds stay year round and others migrate in. Some birds that stay year round are cardinals, juncos, dove, some sparrows, blue jays. Some birds will sit on the feeder while they eat. Examples are cardinals, juncos, sparrows. Some birds grab and go.
Examples are chickadees, titmouse, nuthatch. Some birds hide their food. Examples are woodpeckers and blue jays. Seed eating birds like millet but not milo. Make sure your mixed birdseed is a good mix of grains the birds like. The various finches love thistle seed. Cardinals, chickadees, titmouse love sunflower seeds. Almost all birds love suet. Make sure to have fruit and nuts in any suet mixture.
We always have informative speakers. Our next meeting is at Texas Sage, Oct. 14, at 3pm. Paige Williams, owner of Texas Sage will be our guest speaker. Topic is worms and worms castings which are very beneficial in garden soil.
