Commissioners court holds public hearing on tax rate

InaloadedCommissioners Court meeting agenda, the court took action on several budget related items including a public hearing on the proposed tax rate.

No one spoke during the public hearing or during public comments held Monday, Sept. 8.

The proposed county tax rate is $.3811 per $100 home valuation, a decrease from last year’s tax rate of $0.3913. Last year’s estimated taxes on a median-valued home ($253,220) were $990.85. This year, it is estimated to be $965.03.

To wrap up the yearend budget, FY 2024-25 budget adjustments have began rolling in. A slew of adjustments was made and all adjustments were a net zero effect, meaning it was simply a transfer from one portion of a department’s line items to another, and in some cases departmental contingency funds that were available.

Every single budget adjustment is included on the county’s website at www.co.erath.tx.us once the minutes from the meeting are available.

In the land development portion of the meeting, Subdivision Coordinator Jason Gardner presented an item for two lots in Mountain Lakes, section two to be combined into a single lot.

“No buildings are anticipated on the second lot, they simply want more space,” he said. Approval was unanimously given.

Commissioners also considered the preliminary plat for Comanche Moon phases three and four. Phases one, two and five are already complete, he said.

“They have complied with everything we have asked,” Gardner said. “They are wanting to move forward with road construction.”

The court unanimously approved the preliminary plat.

Tax Assessor-Collector Valerie Stephen presented information regarding an interlocal agreement between the county and North Texas Tollway Authority.

The county will flag and stop renewals of vehicle registration for anyone who has unpaid tolls with NTTA. For this service, the county will receive $6.50 from NTTA.

After executing a real estate contract with Bennett Real Estate for Precinct 1’s new property, an amendment was requested to the contract about the sellers having right of first refusal if the county ever decides to sell the property.

No action was taken on the burn ban and the county is still in good shape as far as drought indexes are concerned, County Judge Brandon Huckabee said.

In other business the court: Approved sheriff and constable fees for 2026. There were no changes to these fees Approved applying for SB22 grant for $350,000 to aid the sheriff’s office Received and filed an order from the district judge on the auditor’s department and court reporter’s salary. This is an annual occurrence done by the district judge.

Six old office chairs were deemed zero value from the Agrilife Extension Office, allowing others in the county to use them if needed.
