“This has been over 15 years of my life. We have accomplished much but it has been a great sacrifice for my family,” Joe Brown said, about his retirement from Precinct 3 County Commissioner on Monday, June 10.

Erath County Judge Brandon Huckabee appointed Sherman Edwards to fill Brown’s unexpired term for the remainder of the year after Brown resigned Monday.

Edwards won the Republican primary on May 28 and would have taken his seat for Precinct Three in January 2025.

He was sworn into office on Monday afternoon.

Brown said he has plans to enjoy his retirement with his family including an upcoming trip to Colorado.

“I’m going to decompress and for the first time in 15 years I’m going to turn off my cell phone,” Brown said.

Edwards said he’s excited to get started in the position.

“It’s a wonderful time. I hope I can fill his shoes and do a great job for Precinct 3,” Edwards said about Brown.

Edwards was first hired by Brown and has been working inside Precinct 3 for the past two years.

“I am thankful for the 15 years of service Commissioner Brown has given to the citizens of Erath County. He has been a dedicated servant and helped move Erath County forwards in many ways throughout his time in office. I wish him well as he gets to spend more time with his family and I feel certain he will still find a way to serve the citizens of Erath,” Judge Huckabee said.

Also at the Monday Commissioners Court meeting a few other business items occurred.

A proclamation for men’s health month was presented byHuckabeetorepresentatives from Texas Health Stephenville. National Men’s Health Month is held each June and was established in 1994.

Representatives shared information with the public about a coordinated community event “Man Up for Men’s Health” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 22 at Stephenville Senior Center, located at 164 E. College Street.

Texas Health, Main Street Stephenville, city of Stephenville and Texas A&M Agrilife Extension are partnering for a free comeand- go community program focused on issues that affect men’s health.

There will be refreshments provided, resource vendors, door prize drawings and a variety of speakers.

The free event is open to men of all ages.

Commissioners also gave unanimous approval for two projects. One of the projects in Precinct 2, seven miles west of Lingleville, is to repair the road to Lowell Cemetery off on Farm-to-Market 8. The road has been impacted by recent rainfall.

The other project is for a permit for driveway construction in Precinct 4 in regards to a new gas line going in. The county will once again be partnering with the city of Stephenville for the upcoming Electronics Recycling event set for 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 12. The county will split the cost with Stephenville, paying $2,400.

“This is a good deal,” Commissioner Dee Stephens said. “These past two years we’ve had so many TVs. I’ve never seen this before.”

A resolution was signed between Erath County and the Erath County Livestock Association to shred and mow around the county livestock barn when needed.

“This way we can just do it two to three times a year,” Stephens said.
