Lone Star Iris Society to meet Nov. 1
The Lone Star Iris Society will meet Saturday, Nov. 1, at noon at the True Vine Church Fellowship Church, 18940 N. U.S. Highway 281 in Hico.
Their program will be Exploring the Pseudata Iris: A cross of Beauty and Strength, presented by their member Hooker Nichols. Pseudata irises are a cross between i. pseudacorus and Japanese (Ensata) irises. The irises grow very well in Texas climates and can be planted in pots or directly in the ground. The flower stalks carry multiple blossoms and many cultivars show a pronounced “eyelash” or “eye-liner” pattern around their signal patch (the colored area at the base of the falls.) Hooker Nichols is a well-known Texas and Oklahoma iris hybridizer. He began his love of flowers at the young age of five when his Aunt Theda Clark who owned a commercial iris garden in northwestern Oklahoma taught him how to grow and hybridize irises.
He has won numerous awards from the American Iris Society ranging from median, tall bearded, and Louisiana irises. His interest in hybridizing daylilies has grown through the years. He and his wife Bonnie have a commercial iris and daylily garden east of Dallas. Hooker has introduced several daylilies.
There is no charge to attend this program. Refreshments will be served.
