One person has been arrested in conjunction with a fatal shooting occurring over the weekend in Stephenville.

According to information released by the Stephenville Police Department, at around midnight April 2, officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 300 block of South Lillian Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male inside a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, as well as two occupants. Devonte Johnson, 23, of Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the probable cause arrest affidavit, Johnson was visiting the apartment of the two occupants, including Lorena Yamileth Miranda, 20, of Dallas.

Both Miranda and the other subject stated she had been showing Johnson a handgun that was gotten for home protection when the shot was fired. She stated she did not mean to shoot Johnson and did not check to see if the gun was loaded before handling it.

When running the serial number through the system, the firearm was reported stolen in Killeen. During the investigation, the second subject (which is not being named since charges were not filed against him), stated the firearm was his and he had bought it from another individual not knowing it was stolen.

While doing a consent search in the residence, officers uncovered a white substance which Miranda admitted was cocaine that she was selling.

Miranda was arrested and charged with manslaughter, a Second Degree felony and possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1, with intent to distribute, a Second Degree felony.

Miranda’s bond was set at $550,000 for the Erath County Jail.
