Fly-in returns to Dublin 9F0

Dublin Municipal Airport (located at 1200 S. Liberty St.) invites aviation fans and newcomers alike to the fourth annual Light Sport Fly-in, featuring flights and food from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The event is free to the public with Coach's BBQ selling brisket sandwiches and BBQ by the pound from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For those unfamiliar with the designation, light sport craft are more economical vehicles weighing 1,320 pounds or less.

Recent years have also seen the inclusion of ultralights. Ultralight craft are planes that weigh 254 pounds or less.

The airport has put out a call for all pilots who light fly craft on the lighter end of the spectrum including lights, ultralights, gyrocopters, tube and fabric.

“We want birds of an LSA feather to flock together and celebrate this incredible segment of private aviation,” Dublin Airport manager Brad Stanford wrote in the promotional flyer.

The flyer also encourages pilots who may not be comfortable in crowds but want to participate to do multiple fly-bys to offer some good photo ops.

Those in attendance can also check out the airport’s flight simulator (purchased through a Dublin EDC grant), a three-screen trainer that features a full flight deck to simulate what it’s like to be in the air.

Stanford encourages everyone interested to attend, saying that pilots and aviation fans love to share their information. For more info, visit dublinaero.com.
