“So if we’re thinking of getting married, when should we get married?,” Wyndi asked me innocently more than a year ago.

“I think it should be October,” said 2022 Paul. “My grandpa always believed that you should plan good events around the days that bad events happened.” (this was in reference to both the time of year he passed as well a both of our former anniversaries.)

“Heh heh heh,” snickered September and October 2023 ready to spring dozens if not hundreds of events and items for us to handle while getting ready for the event.

At least it is getting cooler like we wanted. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

We’re managing to get it all done and on track. It’s just required a lot of planning in advance like grabbing enough pumpkins for a pumpkin carving reception gathering on Thursday night because Senior night is Friday and the wedding is Saturday afternoon.

Given the packed pages of our calendars, it may sound insane that I took a five day trip with my Best Men in September on a week where Wyndi had to cover 8 or nine events including a football game.

The suggestion was made by someone who has been one of my best friends since we met in the sixth grade. As events continued to pile up that week, I tried to weasel out of the trip but he, my fiance and my other best man wouldn’t hear of it.

I’m very glad they pushed back.

Over the course of several days, we did a taste tour at Stranahan’s Whiskey distillery, visited the giant art museum in Denver and ate a wealth of great food including ramen bowls, French cuisine, Israeli fare and gourmet breakfasts.

I’m sure bachelor’s weekend conjures images of debauchery, but we saved all that money for visits to Mile High Comics, the nation’s largest comic books store and Meow Wolf in Denver.

For those who don’t know, Meow Wolf is part amusement park/part art installation. There are currently four locations in the US with the newest opening at nearby Grapevine.

Each location has a different theme and Denver’s is called Convergence Station with clues around the large facility hinting at trading and erasing memories across alien worlds. This leads to a variety of rooms from sci-fi back alleys to alien forests and cathedrals. The place was packed with guests of all ages either really into the story or completely baffled as to what was going on. The confusion kind of added to the fun.

Many times during the trip, I thought of Wyndi, who was busy at home covering everything so I could have a trip to treasure as well as my friend’s wife who was watching over their five daughters at home.

Both of us remarked at times that we wished they could have been there for meals or certain moments but I am grateful to have had that time with two of my closest friends. I see that both of them know how important that was to us. I’m glad he has a wife like that and am enthusiastically counting down the days until I do too. Next trip is yours, Wyndi!
