‘You realize you’ll never get a birthday of your own again, right?’

My girlfriend, Wyndi, was presented with this question from her mother as we approached our birthdays at the beginning of the month. (Hers is Aug. 2; Mine is Aug. 4.)

It was a milestone birthday for her so I’d been racking my brain for several months on making it noteworthy.

I came up with some pretty, morbid over the hill ideas that played on us both being editors. The ideas would also fit it with a big box of decorations her mom gave me that included a black arrangement full of items like Preparation H, glasses, an ice pack, denture care items and more all arranged amidst a base of toilet paper rolls.

I came up with some decent party ideas, but events kept forcing me to change plans until we ditched a regular party altogether.

Instead, we took a small group of friends to the Dallas World Aquarium (an indoor zoo/aquarium hybrid located in former downtown Dallas warehouses), to eat and to shop.

Wyndi traveled into town and was joined by one of her best friends since middle school as we started a weekend of hanging out and random activities.

I was a little insecure about the lack of an actual party but Wyndi said it was one of her favorite birthdays just for having the group of friends and family coordinating and willing to spend time together.

She also voiced some insecurity about me having to plan so much for her around my own birthday, but I enjoyed the weekend just as much since it was a little more low-key and full of friends and things I liked as well.

As we get older, I do realize that one of the greatest gifts we can offer each other is time.

Wyndi and I might not get our own “special day” as long as we’re together, but I was happy to spend time sharing a fun weekend for us both.
