On Monday, Nov. 23, authorities were dispatched to Proctor Lake for a possible drowning at around 1:30 p.m.. A witness reported that a vehicle was attempting to back a boat towards the water when it became dislodged and began drifting off the trailer. The driver swam approximately 30 yards into the water in pursuit of the boat when he started calling for help. The witness called 9-1-1 but was unable to assist otherwise. The man had been underwater for several minutes when emergency services arrived. At about 4:25 p.m. game warden brought the victim to the surface. He was identified as Jessie Lee Thurman, 49, of Santo.

Hico students were back at school last week after a shutdown caused by the possible COVID exposure of one staff member that resulted in too many staff members having to quarantine to maintain classes.
