IN THE STACKS

“Welcome to Your Brain: Why You Lose Your Car Keys But Never Forget How to Drive and Other Puzzles of Everyday Life”

“Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons”

By Siegfried Engelmann, Phyllis Haddox, Elaine Bruner

Often reading can be a challenge for adults as well as children. Written in an amazingly simple step-by-step program, a solid second-grade reading level can be achieved.

Take twenty minutes a day and use the easy-to-follow route to the most essential skill. Nothing complicated here; this may be just the trick to get a stalled reader on the right track.

“Solutions and Other Problems”

By Allie Brosh

The author shares funny stories from childhood, adventures of some very naughty pets, analyzes her own character flaws and reflects on grief, loneliness, and powerlessness along with how wacky this modern life is.

A feast for the eye, there are full-color illustrations put together by this gifted author. It has been some time since Brosh has published and this one is worth the wait.

“The Sacred Year: Mapping the Soulscape of Spiritual Practice—How Contemplating Apples, Living in a Cave and Befriending a Dying Woman Revived My Life”

By Michael Yankoski

The flipside of Allie Brosh’s book, this one of intense contemplation may be in order as we move forward into 2021. Feeling a bit frustrated and/or disillusioned with life?

Those were exactly the emotions Yankoski was feeling as a motivational speaker. Guided by a local monk, he embarked on a journey to find meaning. Both charming and philosophical, this may be just what we need to tackle the months ahead.

For anyone who has not yet visited the library, make 2021 the year to do so. A library card is completely free of charge and opens the door to endless information, also free of charge.
