The Dublin Lions went 2-0 at the DeLeon Baseball tournament Friday, March 6 before rainfall stopped play the following day.
“I’m proud of these kids,” said head baseball coach Andrew Norwood. “They are working hard to improve their skills every day. They are putting the work in and you can see it!”
In the first game, Dublin slayed the Bangs Dragon 12-2. The Lions were first on the board in the third inning after Jaden Gauna lined out, scoring a run. Bangs tied it up when they went at bat but a ground out by Hudsen Joslin gave Dublin a 3-1 lead.
The Lions broke free at the top of the sixth when they scored six runs on five hits. Caden Vanbebber, Paxton Loper, Kyler Gaitan and Joslin all singled scoring runs while Aaron Rodriguez and Ivan Phelps scored runs after drawing walks. Rodriguez and Daniel Velasquez each scored three hits as the team racked up 14 in the game.
Joslin managed 3 runs batted in and Velasquez stole two bases.
The Lions also won 8-3 over the Santo Wildcats. Vanbebber and Gaitan each scored two hits for the Lions while Vanbebber, Phelps, Rodriguez, Velasquez, Gauna, Joslin and Joe Salinas each drove in a run. The team also went errorless in the field.
The Lions returned home Monday, March 9 but had trouble finding runs against the Peaster Greyhounds. The game ended in an 11-0 win for the visitors.
