Lions cut teeth in scrimmage

The Dublin Lions are hitting the road tonight (Aug. 17), taking on the Bulldogs in scrimmages starting at 6 p.m. in Clyde.

Dublin High School Athletic Director/ Head Football Coach Greg Hardcastle reported the order will follow last Friday’s scrimmages against the Hamilton Bulldogs with JV taking the field for about 45 minutes.

The varsity will then warm up and get some more experience in for the upcoming season.

Hardcastle was overall pleased with how the Lions performed on Cervetto field Friday night.

“I thought we moved the ball well and really competed,” the coach said, noting that Dublin had to fight against Hamilton who had the advantage of size with “some big kids.”

Hardcastle also praised his Junior quarterback, noting Kaden Gaitan “looked really good in the pocket.”

The scrimmage provided lessons to carry into this week’s scrimmage and into the season.

“We had some mistakes but they were all things that were very fixable,” he said.

With 52 players in this year’s program, Hardcastle is optimistic about the schedule and aims to have his players keep improving from week-to-week.

The home scrimmage also acted as the annual Our Day to Shine with around $350 in donations collected for the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation Benevolence Fund.

The Lions will return home to Cervetto Field on Thursday, Aug. 24 as they take on Fort Worth Christian in the first game of the 2023 season. (There will not be a JV game that night.)
