The Dublin Lady Lions showed their fight in the Dublin Athletic Booster Club Tournament games last week, facing Crawford in their final game with only five on the court.

Despite losses in the games, the varsity girls were able to achieve some good moments and get on the board.

This was after a rough opener against Brownwood on Thursday, Nov. 30.

“We did not have very good defense and couldn’t stop them when they got hot,” said head girls basketball coach Kim Perez.

Olivia Salyer scored 9 for Dublin. Adriana Rosalez, Madison Turley, Ingrid Hernandez, Sydney Master and Emma Vargas each had 2.

The Lady Lions faced Cross Plains the next morning and came in energized.

“[We] played them much better that night than we did when we scrimmaged them,” said Perez. “We were tied at 44 starting the 4th. We came out cold and only scored 2 points to their 16.”

Derby Kukla led scoring with 16 for Dublin and had 12 rebounds. Salyer had 11 points, Turley and Stewart each had 6, Calderon with 3, and Vargas had 2.

Dublin returned to the court that night to face Goldthwaite.

We did some good things on offense and had much better defense,” Perez said. “Each game we find ourselves working on something different.”

Vargas led scoring with 10. Salyer had 6, Turley had 5, Wendy Calderon had 3, and Rosalez, Kukla, and Master had 2 each.

The Lady Lions finished the tournament with a Saturday morning fight against Crawford, starting the game with only six players before Turley had to sit out due to an ankle injury from Thursday night.

“This was an exciting game to say the least,” said Coach Perez. “We were hustling.” Salyer had 9 points and 7 rebounds, Stewart had 9 points, Kukla, Turley, and Vargas had 5.

This tournament appearance followed a Nov. 28 away game against DeLeon which ended 65-28 in DeLeon’s favor. Turley had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Calderon had 6 and Master had 5 and 6 rebounds, Vargas had 4. Salyer, Rosalez, Hernandez and Adriana Stewart had 2 a piece.

The Lady Lions were set to face Whitney this week before starting district play next Tuesday vs Brock at home at 6:15 p.m.
