Dublin High School band members earned top marks April 1 at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert and Sightreading Evaluation, one of the state’s top music assessments for school ensembles. The ensemble was presented straight Division I ratings in both portions, receiving a Sweepstakes award—the highest honor given at the contest.
During the concert portion, the group performed three prepared selections: “Crown of Castille March” by Johnnie Vinson, “Circles” by Brian Balmages, and “Sirens” by Randall Standridge. Judges evaluated tone quality, balance, and overall musical performance.
In the sightreading portion, students were given a piece of music they had never seen before and had just seven minutes to study it before performing it.
The judges from both portions of the event were extremely complimentary of the band as the bestowed the group their ‘Superior’ ratings, according to DISD head band director Cathryn Smith “It is always an honor to watch the students light up when they realize their hard work has paid off,” said Smith. “I am continually in awe of their willingness to rise to every challenge, no matter the circumstances. I am beyond thankful to be part of their musical journey. To the seniors, I hope they continue making music far beyond these four walls.”
