April Agriculture Education Opportunities
We are finally allowed to start having some in-person meetings. We will be having several meetings in April and most of them will offer an opportunity to get some CEU’s.
Peanut Program
The Peanut Production Program will be held on Tuesday, April 6th at the DeLeon City Auditorium. Registration will start at 9:30 and the meeting will run from 10:00 AM until approximately 1:00 PM.
We have Dr. James Grichar, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Research Peanut Scientist, talking about “Fungicide Programs and Management” and “Peanut Herbicides and Weed Management in Peanuts”. We also have Dr. John Cason, Assistant Professor of Peanut Breeding and Genetics Texas A&M AgriLife Research, and Dr. Emi Kimura, Texas Peanut Specialist, discussing “Peanut Variety Trials, What’s New and Nematode Tolerant Varieties”. We will be offering 2 IPM CEU’s at the program. Lunch will be provided by our great local sponsors.
Comanche County CEU Program
This program will be held on Friday April 9th from 8:30 AM until approximately 3:00 PM at the DeLeon City Auditorium. This will be an excellent opportunity for folks to get caught up on CEU credits and get some excellent training. We will be offering 5 total CEU’s with 2 L&R, 2 IPM and 1 drift. This is enough to fulfill a commercial applicators requirement for the year.
We have some excellent topics being covered. Speakers will include Scott Nolte, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Weed Specialist- “Auxin Training”, Jason Jones, Texas Department of Agriculture- “Laws and Regulations”, Mark Matocha, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agriculture and Environmental Safety - “Herbicide application and Drift Management”. After Lunch we will have Dr. Sonja Swiger, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Entomologist, covering Insect Management in W a t e r m e l o n s , Cantaloupes and Vegetables” and lastly Thomas Isakeit, Texas A&M Professor of Plant Pathology, will be covering “Disease Management in Watermelons and Cantaloupes”.
We will be offering the Auxin Training at 9:00 that morning for those that maybe spraying cotton. You can come and attend just this portion of the program if you do not need the extra 4 CEU’s. The program will cost $50.00 and lunch will be included. Please call the office: 325-356-2539 to register for the program.
Dairy Outreach Program
For all the dairy families out there, that need DOPA credits we will have the Spring DOPA meeting on Thursday, April 15th at the Foster Home Grubbs Center located at 1779 N. Graham St. Stephenville, TX. We will offer 5 DOPA credits. We will follow our traditional schedule with the morning session starting at 10:00 AM and offering 2-DOPA credits, the afternoon session beginning at 1:00 and offering 3-DOPA credits.
This year’s topics and speakers include: Dr. Brent Auverman- Composting Carcasses, Dr. Jake Mowrer-Soil Nutrient Management, Dr. Sonja Swiger- Fly and Manure Management, Darren Turley- Anerobic Digestors and Updates, Catherine Stanley with NRCS- Lagoon Construction. There is no charge and lunch will be provided by our great local sponsors.
Small Grain Field Day
Once again, this year we have an extensive set of small grain trials with many varieties and species. Weather permitting, we will have a field day at the trial location on Friday, April 23rd from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The field location is on County Road 322 near Gustine. From 1476 turn onto CR 322 east toward Gustine School. We will have signs marking the location.
This is an excellent opportunity to come and see all the varieties and species side-by-side. We will have the new small grain specialist, Dr. Fernando Guillen Portal, on-hand to talk about varieties, management and winter kill. We will be offering 1 CEU at the program. There is no charge for the program and lunch will be provided by local sponsors.
