The community is invited to join together at Dublin's Corner Lot at 9:50 a.m. in sending off Dublin local Michael Godfrey as he heads to compete in the paralympic table tennis events in Tokyo next week.
Godfrey became a quadriplegic in 1996 in a bull riding injury that resulted in a break between his c5 and c6 vertebrae. While in rehabilitation, he saw others playing ping pong, which sparked a desire to play competitively and make it to the Olympics. Through a lot of support from his family and community, countless hours of practice and life's ups and downs, he finally made it when he was selected as a wild card finalist for this year's event after the qualifiers.
Godfrey has risen through the ranks in recent years, making it to No. 1 in the USA and No. 25 worldwide in Class 1 Singles.
