A. C. ‘Gus’ Martin, 94, of Dublin, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023.
Funeral services for Gus were held Monday, Aug. 14 at Stephenville Funeral Home ChapelwithWeldonBranham officiating. Burial followed at West End Cemetery in Stephenville.
Gus was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Lingleville to the late Augustus and Josephine Inez Hickey Martin. He married Billie Daniel on Sept. 30, 1951, in Stephenville. She preceded him in death Oct. 7, 2002. Happily, however, Gus and Oma T. kindled a relationship and were married in 2005.
At the age of 14, Gus went to work at the Majestic Theater in Stephenville after the death of his father. He went on to work in multiple other theaters, operating the projector to help the family make ends meet. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 11, 1947. He was shipped out to Okinawa on the USAT Simon Bolivar Buckner and was assigned to the 51st fighter squadron. He returned to the states in 1949 and began taking classes at Tarleton College. In 1951 he married Billie Daniel and went on to work as a broadcast engineer who oversaw the completion of multiple television transmitters in the DFW area and all over parts of the country. He also taught classes in electronics and engineering at Ratliff Electronics School and Oral Roberts University. Not only did he teach engineering at Oral Roberts, but he was also the chief engineer for the Oral Roberts Presents Show.
Gus was also a member of the Dublin First Baptist Church and the Erath County Historical Society. In addition, he was a member of the Dublin Rotary Club and the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He also received an award of recognition from Tarleton State University for his role in developing the Tarleton radio broadcast. He was a proud Texan and a resident of Erath County for the majority of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Oma; daughters, Donita and husband Tom Jones of Stephenville, Lisa and husband Larry Ford of Allen, Gloria Martin of Dublin, and Linda Turner of Hico; grandchildren, Molly and husband Randy Thornton, Heather and husband Jeremy Caldwell, Rachel Hunter, Clay and wife Judy Hawkins, Scott and wife Cindi Hawkins, Debbie and husband John Brennan, and Kynda and husband Eric Hunt; great grandchildren, Hut, Holland, Harper, Lydia, London, Cohen,Stacy,Phillip,Collette, Calvin, and Shelbie.
Besides his parents, and first wife, Billie; Gus was also preceded in death by sisters Carolyn and Doris Jean; and son-in-law, William Tidwell.
