Anna Hunter

With her family by her side, Anna Margaret Hunter, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 2, 2020. 

Anna, a resident of DeLeon, Texas, was born on Oct. 27, 1931 to William Leo Meyer and Sarah Rebecca Skeans in Gainesville, Texas. Anna was married to Finley Manfred Proffer in 1948. 

He preceded her in death in 1961. She married James Audrey Hunter in 1969 who also preceded her in death in 1982. Anna was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Esther Meyer; brothers, William Ray Meyer, Wayne Douglas Meyer, George Leo Meyer, and Claude Eugene Meyer; sisters, Isla Mae Hobbs and Frances Lee Hogan; a son, Daryl Wayne Hunter; a grandson, Thomas Marlin McWhorter, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Mary Kay Hunter.

Anna received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from North Texas State University. She taught school at Callisburg, Texas, Hearne, Texas and Three-Way, Texas before earning a Master’s Degree in Library Science, also from North Texas University. 

Anna continued in the field of education where she first worked as a Library Aide and then Head Librarian at Dublin ISD, where she retired.

Anna had many skills and talents, often teaching and mastering them on her own, which she used to grace the lives of others. At a young age, Anna taught herself to crochet, embroider and sew, accomplishing each artform with perfection. She made Dandi-Lion costumes, cheer uniforms and prom dresses for Dublin students. She made wedding and bridesmaid dresses, baby and school clothes, and holiday clothes for the public and for her children and grandchildren, often making her own patterns and designing her own works of art. She hand-pieced and stitched quilts, crocheted baby blankets, embroidered hundreds of pillow cases, table scarves and dish towels. Each item Anna created was stitched with the love and care that she strove to express in all that she did. There is not enough time or space to capture all that portrays her beauty and her being as she lived her life to serve others.

Anna came to know Jesus as Savior at the age of 9 and was baptized in a country creek in Gainesville, Texas. She was most recently a member of Greens Creek Baptist Church. She introduced her children and grandchildren to her Lord and served faithfully wherever and whenever there was opportunity.

Forever known as “Sissie”, to her brothers and sisters, and “Mother”, “Grandmother”, and “Nana” to a host of children and grandchildren, Anna was the heart and center of her family’s lives. She included everyone, whether family members, friends or strangers. Anna endeavored to meet every need and to love each one without condition.

Anna is survived by her children, Harold and Dianne Hunter, Sammie and Dale Hunter, Finley R. (Randy) and Virginia Proffer, and Darlene and Frank Gaitan; 16 grandchildren and many great and great, great grandchildren.

Visitation with Anna’s family was held Friday evening at Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin. Services to honor her memory were held Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Dublin, Texas. Interment was held at the Altman Cemetery near Carlton, Texas in Erath County.
