A standing ovation was given to Vanessa Pantoja at the Monday, Jan. 22 school board meeting after a proclamation was read honoring the junior for being number one in state for Senior Spanish Creed Speaking in FFA.

Pantoja smiled ear to ear after receiving the honor along with a specialized belt buckle from FFA Sponsor Derek Dunlap.

The junior told the board thank you as she took her seat for the rest of the board meeting and awards.

After a slew of awards, the board adjourned to a short closed session to discuss administrator contracts and the nonrenewal of a probationary contract employee.

After reconvening in regular session, the board unanimously voted to terminate the probationary contract of Brock Miller.

The board unanimously approved the extension of contracts for an additional year for the following individuals: Norma Briseno, Greg Hardcastle, Kalley Mitchell, Kassi Eads, Ron Luedke, Paige Johnson, Amanda Lisso, Brandy Carr, Cedric Ivie, Christopher Duke, Ryan Lewis, Kimberly Bradford, Maegan Ralston, Taylor Clayton, Holly Curry, Kimberly Perez and Lindsay Tyus.

“We could not have the school district that we do without our administrators,” Superintendent Melissa Summers said.

Summers mentioned one name was missing from the list and that was Assistant Superintendent Terri White, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

“Those are going to be some big shoes to fill,” Summers said, with tears in her eyes.

White has been with the school district 32 years.

In other business the board: approved a contract with Erath County for the May 4, 2024 school board election; held a public hearing on the Texas Academic Performance Report; was honored with treats and well-wishes for school board appreciation month.
