With a few exceptions all of the schools of the county have opened and are now moving along nicely. It will be of interest to trustees and patrons of the various schools to know that practically all of the schools closed the 1922-23 term with a small balance to their credit.
Many of the floating accounts were paid in full and it is hoped that this year all schools will close out of debt. The state apportionment as set by the State for this year is $12.00 per capita. State Superintendent, S.M.N. Marrs is hopeful that in the spring the apportionment will be increased to $13.00 per capita. One million five hundred thousand ($1,500,000.00) State Aid will be available this year which is an increase of five hundred thousand dollars over last year. By an economical handling of the funds the average term of school for this year should be at least six months or more.
Section 7 of the new State Aid Law provided that where two or more common school districts or where an Independent district and one or more common school districts consolidate for High School purposes, a grant of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) will be made to such consolidated schools. In addition the State provides for the payment of one half of the cost of transportation of the children in such districts provided the amount does not exceed five hundred dollars.

The majority of Erath County taxpayers took advantage of the three per cent discount on state and county payments made during October, Henry Gilbreath, deputy collector, advised Tuesday.
Total collections made in October, from all sources, amounted to $106,346.87, or approximately 57 per cent of the tax roll.
County taxes collected totaled $49,185.30 for the first month of payments, against the assessed valuation of $85,944.40. State ad valorem tax collections amounted to $20,379.68, or two-thirds of the total valuation of $31,349.56.
