As Dublin ISD students start back to school this week they will be greeted by Counselors Holly Curry and Taylor Clayton.
Clayton will be serving at the high school and Curry will be serving the junior high school.
For Curry, this will mark her third year in admin/ counseling for Dublin Junior High School (her 5th year overall for DISD) and for Clayton, this will be her seventh year for DISD – though her first as a counselor.
Previously, she has taught 4th grade math and she admits she is both nervous and excited when the opportunity to move into counseling came about.
For those unfamiliar with what school counselors do on a daily basis, it entails a little bit of everything – mental health, instructional leaders for teachers, guidance lessons, testing, making sure credits align so students can graduate and even helping with college and career prep.
“We deal with a lot of our special populations so our students have what they need, even before school starts,” Curry said.
Curry said one highlight of their jobs is broadening students horizons of what careers are available to them and what education is required in order to be hired for those careers. Last year, Curry started guidance lessons for students.
“I’m really looking forward to this year,” Clayton said. “I’m excited to learn something new.”
Curry said she is excited for the kids to get a fresh start for the new year and to see all of their accomplishments.
Learning is all part of the game for school counselors as Curry has her EC-6th Generalist and her 4th-8th Generalist through Tarleton and her masters in school counseling through Lamar- Beaumont.
Clayton has her bachelor’s degree in business administration through Tarleton State University, then through iTeach to get her teaching certification in Elementary through 6th grade, is currently going to Tarleton to get her master’s in curriculum instruction and then she will go back to get her master’s in counseling.
