The community of Alexander is enjoying the family atmosphere and the convenience of having a nearby store after the recent opening of the Alexander Country Store.
Terri Greenway, along with her oldest son Mitchell and his wife Lauren, recently opened the business which is located at 17255 East State Highway 6. Terri’s son Jarred is also involved with the store in a supportive role from Lubbock.
Truly a family affair, even 4-year-old granddaughter McKinleigh and newly born grandson, Flint, who is only nine weeks old, hang out at the store.
The building where the store is now located was originally built by her parents, Don and Lola Mitchell in 1968, and they operated it as a feed store until Terri was in junior high school when they sold it.
The building had sat vacant for many years and the Greenway family wanted to reopen a store. Doing their best to pay homage to the family legacy, they repurposed pieces of tin from nearby family ranch land and even the edge of the front counter from an old 2 by 4 Terri’s dad had saved.
“They would be thrilled to see us do this,” she said.
So what is for sale inside the Alexander Country Store?
“Everything we’ve ever had to run to Stephenville right now to get, we put in the store,” Terri said.
While the store offers myriad convenience types of food and drink, including wine and beer, it also offers groceries, pesticides, tobacco products, ag parts and hay and feed. They also offer Dublin Bottling Works drinks for those who may be craving a bottle of 1891 Red Cola and Blue Bell Ice Cream.
The store also showcases a variety of Hunt Brothers Pizzas, which range from $10.99 to $12.99 for an entire pizza.
For those interested in a tasty lunch, they can stop in for a hunk of pizza for $3.49 or two hunks for $6.69, for those who may be extra hungry.
The store also offers loyalty cards for pizza with every seventh pizza being free.
Terri said they are also taking customer requests if there is a specific kind of food or drink they would like to purchase.
On the hay and feed side of things, they are offering cattle, horse and chicken feed, small bales of coastal alfalfa along with big square bales and big round bales.
“We are trying to keep our prices comparable to Dublin and Stephenville,” Terri said.
Perhapsmost importantly, the store offers something that can’t be purchased: a sense of camaraderie among neighbors and those who live near Alexander.
“I have met more of my neighbors in the past three weeks than I have in the past 30 years,” she said.
In the center of the business, there are two tables repurposed from years gone by, but they still serve to offer family togetherness as well as a chance for neighbors to enjoy a cup of coffee together or play a game of dominoes.
“Mom and Dad thought families should do everything together,” Terri said. “And that includes our neighbors.”
The store is currently open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. To order a pizza in advance, call 254-764-4040 and the business does have a Facebook page to keep up- to-date on recent pizza specials.
