Eggstraordinary learning

Paul and myself have had an interesting learning opportunity as of late that many people probably never had the opportunity to endeavor towards: the art of filling Easter eggs.

When Shanna Phelps over at DQ asked us if we were once again on board with helping the Easter Eggstravaganza for the community, we said of course.

We are also being joined this year by the Stephenville Area Elks Lodge who are trying to do more and more for the Dublin community, which we appreciate so much.

Enter the need for egg fillers. It started with us retrieving a large box of mismatched, recycled eggs from last year’s hunt. We honestly didn’t think there were that many until we started pairing. There were about 2,000 in the box, best we can tell.

Shanna is our Easter egg guru and handles donations so we constantly had to tell her, “Hey we are out of candy. Again.”

As we paired, we quickly discovered not all Easter eggs are created equally. Fun fact, the Easter eggs that are split vertically are two sizes, about a tenth of a centimeter off, making even more of a challenge when it comes to pairing. (We secretly think it’s so people will buy new eggs each year instead of pairing them.)

It also became a challenge on which candy would fit. Of course, no chocolate is allowed (it melts too easily) so we found other candies. Sour straws were a personal favorite because they would fit in anything!

I knew perhaps Paul had filled one too many eggs when Sunday he exclaimed, “Where did these come from? These are super high quality eggs! You don’t even have to tape them. Look!” he said, as he dropped the egg onto the hardwood floor and it stayed in tact. Turns out it was a Hobby Lobby egg purchased by the Elk’s lodge volunteers.

We took a break from filling eggs shortly after this. I was afraid we were both going to crack under the pressure.

As we filled and taped eggs and helped Shanna sort the prefilled eggs into groups for Saturday’s hunt, it was easy to get lost in the myriad bright and pastel colors. But one thing is for sure, we do it so Dublin kids will have a chance to make Easter memories for a lifetime.

And that is an eggstraordinary opportunity.
