Remember when we had definitive seasons?
I know several people who have deemed “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” a holiday classic.
Although it was initially a flop, Disney has since embraced the movie and decorations pop up for both Halloween and Christmas every year in all sorts of stores.
For those unfamiliar with the tale, the residents of Halloween Town learn about a Christmas world and decide to take it over, putting their own spooky mark on the festivities.
It of course goes disastrously wrong and everybody learns a lesson. Cue credits.
What’s interesting is that the lesson of that movie is getting more and more forgotten even as the movie is embraced more and more.
If you want Christmas decorations from craft stores, you better start shopping in September. If you want Halloween decorations, you better think about it during the summer.
Wyndi and I were at a dollar store last week and noticed that they were still putting up Halloween products but had to reserve an aisle for Christmas at the same time.
When we visited her mom in July, a store in Amarillo already had several aisles of Christmas ready to go. I’ve seen people on Facebook and other social media shame people for putting up decorations too early, and that influenced Wyndi when she was trying to determine when to put up decorations.
The fact is having the decorations up makes her happy and we’ve been able to buy them for several weeks if not months.
So we had bats on the walls and body parts on the table in September. We have hectic lives and are often away. If you can squeeze more enjoyment out of a season, I say go for it.
