Garden club learns with Texas Sage

Body

The Dublin Garden Club held our regular October meeting, the 14th, at Texas Sage.

Owner Paige Williams and staff gave us a very informative presentation on worms and worm castings and their benefit to our soil. Texas Sage processes worm castings in small batch processing. This insures they can regulate the temperature. Some industrial batches are so large they can reach over 230 degrees. This kills the microbes and makes their resulting product sterile.

The castings can be used in the soil when potting plants or sowing seeds. It is a natural food for the plants and retains water much better than regular soil or potting mix. The castings can also be put into a closed bin. With this process, water and the casting have air pumped their them continually. This process makes a brew that can be sprayed on the soil for a natural fertilizer. One bottle cap of this brew can produce up to 10,000 microbes. Some pivot systems have started using the brew to fertilize their fields. This process also helps the soil to retain moisture.

Paige and staff gave the club a tour of how they take care of the worms and harvest the castings. The bags of castings can last for a long time. The brew is good for 48 hours. So any brew they do not sell within the 48 hours is used at the nursery with wonderful results.
