The Woman’s Thursday Club held their regular monthly meeting October 8 at the Dublin Historical Museum. Vice President Patty Hirst presided. Patty also had the program on the U.S. Constitution signers. Patty started the program by telling us more about what happened to the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Five were captured by the British, tortured and killed. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost sons in the Revolutionary War. Two more sons were captured. Nine died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

Our forefathers defiantly paid a high price for our freedoms.

Patty also told us about the first four men we are studying that were founding fathers of the U.S. Constitution. They are Roger Sherman, John Langdon, David Brearley, and John Dickinson. These men were farmers, lawyers and judges with a deep conviction and love of our country. The phrase “United we stand, divided we fall” is traced to John Dickinson in a 1768 revolutionary war ballad, The Liberty Song. John Dickinson was an eloquent and prolific writer.
