The annual Back-to-School Fair is this Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dublin Public Library.
“The mission of the back-toschool fair is to support families in our community, and allow every student to feel dignity and pride on the first day of school,” Library Director Adina Dunn said.
Those wanting to aid in this year’s event are encouraged to donate new or like new backpacks to the library, new or like new makeup bags and personal hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, conditioner and deodorant.
This year’s event will include free backpacks (while supplies last, on a first come, first serve basis) along with hygiene items.
Dublin Lions Club and Dublin Dairy Queen will serve hot dogs and ice cream at the event.
“We have special activities for the children with a foam machine from noon to 1 p.m.,” Dunn said.
Free haircuts for kids will also be offered again this year, tentatively beginning at 8:30 a.m. offered by Shear Heaven and All About You Spa & Salon. (Those receiving haircuts are asked to come with clean, untangled hair.)
“Last year, our Back-to-School Fair was a huge success, with over 200 children and families participating. We had many sponsors and the community support was, without a doubt, the reason we were able to reach so many children!” Dunn said.
Dunn reported a lot of partners are coming to offer fun activities and information. One particular table will present information on the ongoing photo voice project, funded through a grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. Right now, visitors can check out a Polaroid camera and take photos of strengths and supports, barriers and challenges and needs and gaps. The photos will be displayed in cooperation with Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council.
Guests can also enter a raffle for a custom metal grill donated by Bill Rodriguez to benefit the library.
“We just appreciate everybody’s help,” said Dunn. “The amount of community support we receive for this is just amazing. The appreciation we see in kids receiving supplies and the excitement from volunteers helping are infectious. The library appreciates being a part of it and any help we can get in assisting the community.”
