Master Gardener Plant Sale Features Texas Natives Erath County gardeners who want to include native plants in their landscapes are in luck. The Erath County Master Gardeners (ECMG) spring plant sale, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, will feature many varieties of Texas natives and adapted plants.

This year the sale will include favorites such as Gregg’s Blue Mistflower, Esperanza, and a variety of Salvia as well as many plants that have not been available at previous sales. Examples include Big Red Sage. Pyramid Flower, Chile Pequin, Texas Mountain Laurel, Chrysactinia mexicana A. Gray (Damianita), Blue Leadwort, and Black Samson.

Certified master gardeners will be at the sale to explain the advantages of Texas natives and help local gardeners select the most appropriate plants for their landscapes. Natives offer many benefits, in particular their ability to thrive with minimal human intervention. They don’t need a lot of water, fertilizer, or chemicals.

Gardeners who enjoy watching birds, bees, and butterflies in their yards are switching to natives because they provide food and shelter for these pollinators. Pollinators help increase crop yields for both home vegetable gardeners and commercial agriculture operations in the county.

ECMG encourages gardeners to stop by the sales’ information station where they will find gardening guides from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. There will also be fun gardening activities for kids. The silent auction will feature a garden cart filled with gardening tools, garden décor, seeds, and other goodies.

Check the ECMG Facebook page (Facebook) for Featured Plant posts describing many of the plants that will be available at the plant sale. The posts provide highlights of each plant along with a link for more detailed information.
