The Lingleville Lady Cardinals took on Huckabay in a Dec. 10 away game before returning to the fight foes at the Dec. 12-14 home basketball tournament.

The Lady Cards put up 22 to Huckabay’s 50 in the away game.

“We started off strong against Huckabay, going back and forth with them in the first half,” said Lingleville head girls basketball coach Brandon Haught. “They were able to make some good halftime adjustments and that allowed them to push their lead further. Either way, I’m proud of the way our kids went out there and fought them for 32 minutes. I expect us to do even better against them when we play them at home.” Player of the Game for Lingleville was Alexa Rosalez with 13 points.

Lingleville started the tourney against Strawn, who scored 56 to Lingleville’s 38.

“We played really well for 3 quarters against Strawn, but a rough 2nd quarter where we were outscored 20 to 10 is what really did us in,” said Haught. He added that Ciklali Rangel (who scored 23 points in the game) had an excellent second half, which helped keep the teams in step from there. He also credited Kenleigh Jones who scored 7 points in the fight.

The Lady Cards faced Trinity Christian in game 2 scoring 37 to the visitor’s 51.

“We had a very poor first quarter, giving up several fast breaks and wide open threes, but from the 2nd quarter to the finish we managed to outscore Trinity 33-32,” said Haught. Our kids are young, and so we make mistakes and have moments where we don’t start off fast. Rangel led Lingleville with 12, Jones had 9, and Denise Toledo scored 8.

The Lady Cards rallied back in game 3 with a 36-30 win over Savoy.

“We are starting to see consistent offensive output by our kids and so it is helping us be in these games,” said Haught. “We beat a very good Savoy team here that came in 12-4. Our record is very misleading to what we can do. Our opponents might think we aren’t very good and that only helps us come out and surprise them. I was really proud of our kids for this win, because we played with 6 girls and were the much smaller team. But we boxed out and rebounded our way to the win.” Rangel scored 15, Jones had 11, and Toledo snagged 6.

The Lingleville girls ended the tourney with a 39-27 loss to Brock.

Haught called the game different from the night before as they faced a small and quick Brock team.

“They got a few too many perimeter shots off that we couldn’t contest and that is what did us in,” said Haught. “Either way, we came out and battled.” (Jones scored 9, Amelia Finney had 8, Rangel had 6.)

Haught credited Denise Toledo as Lingleville’s player of the tournament.
