A lot of work has gone into improving the facility and adoption process at the Dublin Animal Shelter since Larry Stanford started as code enforcement/animal control officer. Its recognition as a No Kill Shelter by the Best Friends Network rewards the many hours (and miles) that have earned the facility that status.
“There was a lot of teamwork [that went into it],” Stanford said. “From back when Kayla [Splawn] was here with the admin for the police department to Jordan [Conner] helping and me working and public works helping when I’m out.”
One of the most productive relationships has been the city working with Austin Pets Alive. Stanford has driven to places many times in the past 18 months with unadopted dogs and the non-profit places them into homes with further reach than the shelter would have on its own.
“They’ve been a real blessing to us,” he said. “I didn’t know this before but a lot of states up north don’t have as many dogs, so they transport them up there [for adoption].”
Their turnaround has made it more comfortable for the dogs to get out and run around since the shelter only has six pens.
Austin Pets Alive also blessed the shelter with several donations including shelves, containers and other needs.
A wishlist was also shared online recently and Stanford stated his appreciation for all the donations they’ve received from locals. That wishlist and pictures of the dogs currently up for adoption can be found at Dublin TX Animal Shelter on Facebook. There is also an account at Bradberry’s Best for the shelter for anyone wanting to donate food.
Stanford said his favorite thing as an animal control officer is seeing the animals adopted into a loving home locally. He urged all pet owners to make sure their dog is registered with the city and chipped and for dogs to be kept on a leash or fenced in the yard.
