Kids learn history of Somervell cemetery

Body

The Bosque River Chapter of the Children of the Republic of Texas met on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Squaw Creek Cemetery in Somervell County.

After a brief meeting the members, who came from Fort Worth and Glen Rose, fulfilled a project which required them to clean the cemetery, find the oldest grave and find graves of ancestors.

Though this cemetery is generally well kept, there was still some trash to be picked up. Members then located two graves that were dated 1860 and were the oldest in the cemetery. The members present were led by their great grandmother and great aunt to the graves of various ancestors, including greatgreat grandparents.

The chapter is sponsored by the Bosque River Chapter of Daughters of the Republic of Texas. To become a member a child must be a direct descendant of a man or woman who served the Republic of Texas prior to February 1846. For more information on becoming a member go to www.drtinfo. org or call Carol Dismukes at 972-977-7727.
