Honoring heritage

On Saturday, March 23, family and friends gathered at the Old Dublin Memorial Park Cemetery for the unveiling of medallions honoring Evan Shoemaker - Defender of the Republic of Texas, and his wife, Matilda - Citizen of The Republic of Texas, and their daughter, Elizabeth Daffern, Citizen of The Republic of Texas. Evan and Matilda arrived in the Tenewah Municipality of Mexico in early 1935 and Elizabeth was born during The Republic in May 1836. Three of their children moved to Erath between 1858 and 1869 and all are citizens of The Republic. Bosque River Chapter of the DRT sponsored this event and will honor the remaining siblings, Mary O’Neal and Joel Shoemaker, at a date to be announced. Family lines attending were Shoemakers, Morrisons, Dafferns, Shillingburgs, Procters and Stoddards.
