Filing closes for primaries

Filings for county and state offices have officially closed for the March primaries and some changes will be taking place in Erath County office holders.

The following information is what was available on the Secretary of State’s website, prior to the last filing date, which was Monday, Dec. 11. Anyone filing on that date will be featured in next week’s edition.

Current County Attorney Lisa Pence is not running for office again and Attorney Bethany Espinoza has filed to run for the office in the Republican Party primary. She is uncontested (as of press time).

Sheriff Matt Coates has filed on the Republican Party ticket to retain his office as sheriff and is uncontested (as of press time).

Long-time Tax Assessor Collector Jennifer Carey is not running to retain her position and a slew of individuals have filed for this office. Niki McInroe-Cogburn, Tina Holzschuh, Mike Jones and Valerie Stephen have all filed for the office on the Republican Party ticket and Mary Cruz Serrano has filed for the office on the Democratic Party ticket.

County Commissioner Precinct 1 Dee Stephens has filed to retain his seat and he is uncontested (as of press time).

Current County Commissioner Precinct 3 Joe Brown is not running to retain his seat and Ben Clements, Sherman L. Edwards and Justin Slawson has filed on the Republican Party ticket.

Current Precinct 1 Constable Jason Schipper has filed to retain his seat and is uncontested (as of press time).

Current Precinct 2 Constable Ryan Gibson has filed to retain his seat and is uncontested (as of press time).

Current District Attorney Alan Nash has filed to retain his seat and is uncontested (as of press time).

Incumbent District 25 U.S. Congressman Roger Williams will have opposition on the Republican ticket with candidate Matthew Lucci.

Incumbent U.S. Senator Ted Cruz will have opposition on the Republican ticket with candidates Holland “Redd” Gibson and R E (Rufus) Lopez.

Current District 59 State Rep. Shelby Slawson has filed to retain her seat and Hannah Bohm has filed against her on the Democratic Party ticket.

In the U.S. Presidential race, incumbent Joe Biden has filed to retain his seat on the Democratic ticket and has the following opposition on the Democratic ticket: Gabriel A. Cornejo, Robert Star Locke, Frankie Lozada, Armando “Mando” Perez-Serrato, Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson. On the Republican Party ticket candidates include: Ryan L. Binkley, Chris Christie, Ron Desantis, Nikki Haley, David Stuckenberg and Donald J. Trump.

Other candidates not in the Republican or Democratic primaries will face the chosen candidates in the November 2024 race (such as Green party or independent party candidates.)
