Arrest made in offender shooting

A shooting occurred over the weekend in Stephenville when a registered sex offender was shot.

According to information released by the Stephenville Police Department, on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 9:46 p.m., SPD was dispatched to an injured male in the 300 block of Morgan Mill Rd.

It was determined the male had been shot, and he was airlifted to Fort Worth. The victim was unable to identify his attacker.

Evidence was collected at the scene and an intense investigation was begun to identify and locate the suspect.

An additional call was received by the department of an unidentified male knocking on the door of another registered sex offender’s house. The male was described as wearing a mask, gloves and using a phone to communicate.

During the investigation, a suspect was identified as Charles Austin Broyles. An arrest warrant for Broyles was obtained and he was taken into custody by officers from the SPD and the Region 8 Special Operations Group without incident.

There is no indication of any additional suspects at this time.

This case will be referred to the Erath County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

At this time, according to SPD, the case is being filed as a Second Degree Felony.
