Lady Lions end short softball season
The 2019-2020 Dublin Lady Lions softball season was cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic and resulting social distancing restrictions
Head Coach Jason Clark had this to say about the short season:
For softball, I know we had some momentum going from the first week in district. I really believe we had a good chance to go fight for a playoff spot.
We had beaten Bangs for the first time in 4 years 14-13. Then in that second game we competed with Eastland, who has been very tough and would have definitely competed for the top spot in district. Senior Lessly Robles hit a home run over the fence at Eastland for the first home run of her career, which was awesome for her.
The girls were really starting to gel together and have fun. We had won multiple games by one run, and some of those we had to come back and win it.
The Hamlin game was very memorable because we had to have a walk off hit in the bottom of the 7th to win it.
We were tied, and Lessly Robles hit a double to get on 2nd. Senior Cameron Davidson came up to the plate and hit a single that bounced over the pitcher and Lessly scored from 2nd to win it. That is the second game winning hit in the bottom of the 7th for Cameron in 2 years.
The decisions had to be made, no doubt about it. It is just unfortunate for the kids, schools, and sports programs.
The state, TEA, and UIL are doing what is best for kids and staff. I hate it for the seniors to have to end their careers this way. We had four seniors this year: #1 Lessly Robles, #10 Emiley Dudley, #15 Cameron Davidson, and #16 Erica Yarbrough. All four of those girls were important parts of the team, and they were leading the team well. They left their mark on this program, and they will be missed.
