Kenneth Dale McIlroy passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Born on January 26, 1941, in Dublin, Texas, Kenneth’s first love was God, as he was baptized into Christ at age 14, and his life was a tapestry of devout dedication to his faith, family, country, and many passions.
Kenneth’s journey began as the beloved son of Gerald and Helen Wilder McIlroy. His life was marked by the love and companionship of his wife, Trudy, and the memory of his second wife, Fonda, who preceded him in death. The legacy of his family includes his son, Brian McIlroy (Jennifer), stepdaughters Christa Newburn (Clay), Christy Markgraf (Chris), Angela Purget, Nicole McIntyre (Nathan), and Renee Petty (Anthony), as well as his daughter-in-law, Teresa Stanford (Johnny). His sister, Rita Pauls (Ron), will fondly remember her brother’s wit and wisdom. Kenneth was a proud patriarch to 16 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren, who will carry forward his zest for life. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey McIlroy, stepson, Faron Purget, and his parents.
Kenneth honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from March 1960 until November 1963. His service was a period of his life that instilled a sense of pride and duty, which he carried with him long after his military tenure ended.
Beyond his family and military service, Kenneth’s interests were vast and varied. He was a published author and an avid photographer, capturing moments of beauty and significance with a keen eye. His love for aviation was not just theoretical; as a Cessna pilot, he took to the skies, experiencing the freedom and perspective that only flight can provide. Kenneth’s collection of firearms was a testament to his appreciation for craftsmanship and history.
Kenneth’s enthusiasm for locomotives was unparalleled. He found joy in riding steam locomotives and visiting train museums, where he could immerse himself in the grandeur of the railways. The Grand Tetons held a special place in his heart, and he often visited, marveling at the majesty of nature.
Those who knew Kenneth will remember him for his quick wit and the laughter he brought to every gathering. His adventurous spirit led him to explore, learn, and experience all life offered. His intelligence was not just in his knowledge but in how he understood and cared for those around him.
Kenneth’s life was a journey of joy, learning, and love. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the indelible mark he left on the hearts of his family and friends. His stories, laughter, and adventurous spirit will live on in the memories of all fortunate to know him.
Kenneth Dale McIlroy’s life was a portrait of a man who embraced every moment with passion and curiosity. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded to laugh heartily, explore bravely, and love deeply, just as he did.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in Kenneth’s memory.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Blue Starr Church of Christ in Claremore, Oklahoma. He was laid to rest in Strouds Creek Cemetery in Tolar.
