Arrest made in fatal wreck

Holly Smith, a beloved Erath County resident, was killed in a car accident last week, and an arrest has been made involving the driver of the 18-wheeler in the crash.

According to information provided by DPS, on Thursday, April 30, at around 6:50 a.m. a white 2006 Peterbuilt Truck-Tractor, towing a semi-trailer was traveling southeast on State Hwy. 6 in Erath County near the 408-mile marker.

The truck was driven by Fernando Robledo Aguilar. According to DPS Sgt. William Lockridge, the truck stopped in both southeast lanes on Hwy. 6 to open a gate to a lease road.

During this time, a grey Kia Carnival van, driven by Smith, was traveling southeast on Hwy. 6 approaching the truck that was parked in the lanes of traffic. The KIA struck the back right tandem tires of the trailer, killing Smith.

The driver of the truck then fled the crash on foot, failing to render aid, law enforcement said.

Aguilar has been arrested on Failure to Stop and Render Aid causing serious bodily injury (a Second Degree felony), no drivers license, improper DL for the type of vehicle and Stop/stand/park on a main traveled roadway. An immigration detainer has also been placed on Aguilar.

A GoFundMe has been established for Smith’s family as she leaves behind four children and her husband.

“She was just four months away from graduating nursing school—a dream she had worked so hard for. Holly was always the first to step up and help anyone in need, and her kindness touched everyone who knew her. Her absence leaves a void that words can hardly describe, and her family is now facing unimaginable grief and uncertainty,” the GoFundMe states.
