Police and other first responders handled a reckless driver call that ultimately ended in a PIT maneuver Wednesday, Sept. 30.
According to information available on social media and verified with local law enforcement, a driver was headed down Hwy. 6 from Hico towards Dublin.
The driver was crossing lanes of traffic, driving into bar ditches and into oncoming traffic, and would not yield for law enforcement when they attempted to stop the vehicle. DPS was called to perform a PIT maneuver, short for Precision Immobilization Technique, a tactic most DPS are trained in.
A PIT is a tactical method used by police to end vehicle pursuits safely and efficiently. Typically, a police vehicle will make a controlled contact with the rear quarter panel of a fleeing vehicle, causing the target vehicle to lose traction, spin, and stop, ideally facing the opposition direction of travel.
In this case, the PIT maneuver disabled the vehicle in front of Big’s convenience store.
Charges against the driver have not yet been filed due to medical concerns. Further information from DPS was not available at press time.
