Comanche County Peanut Program

Peanuts were once the primary crop in the county and while acreage will probably never be what is was at one time, it is on the increase.

The quality of nut we can grow in the area is a bit higher here than other higher producing areas.

This has helped to increase the value of local grown peanuts, which in turn has resulted in an increase in peanut acreage. Due to this increase in acreage and request by producers, the Comanche County AgriLife Extension office will be hosting Peanut Production Program on Tuesday, April 6th at the Deleon City Auditorium. Registration will start at 9:30 and the meeting will run from 10:00 AM until approximately 1:00 PM.

Disease, weeds and nematodes are issues local peanut producers struggle with. To help answer some questions on these topics we will have Dr. James Grichar, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Research Scientist Peanuts talking about “Fungicide Programs and Management” and Weed Management in Peanuts”. We also have Dr. John Cason and Emi Kimura coming to talk about peanut varieties, management, and research trials in the county.

This will be an excellent program with a good lunch sponsored by our great local ag sponsors and 2 IPM CEU’s will be offered. Please call if you plan to attend so we will know how many cans of sardines to order, Comanche County Agents Office 325-356-2539.
