Vacation and the really scary bridge

Body

Paul and myself recently had the pleasure of taking a much needed vacation, heading south to the Beaumont area to visit with some of his extended family.

Though I’ve heard tons about them and they had heard about me, it was our first meeting. I’ll admit I was nervous.

We had a great time, consumed some seafood (well at least Paul did though I did have a bite of crab), and just had a chance to relax. How do two newspapers get time off together?

Well we just told the town to behave and headed out (it mostly worked though a burn ban was issued on our first day on the coast).

Though meeting family can be a scary venture for the first time, for me, one thing was 100 times more frightening. That bridge in the photo above.

One of them is known as the Rainbow Bridge and one is known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge. They are equally terrifying.

After spending some time with Paul’s Aunt Vicky and Uncle Joe on Wednesday and Thursday, along with his Aunt Gaye and Uncle Rick, we ventured to hang out with his cousin James.

As we got there and settled into James’ awesome place, we decided to venture out to get Chinese food. Real live Chinese food. (Not Panda).

I had been warned about the bridge and though I had fears, the Rainbow was on the otherside, so to speak. Only good Chinese food could get me over the bridge.

The food didn’t disappoint and neither did the company of the trip. On Saturday, we got to hang out with everyone at a barbecue (a seafood style one), at his cousin Alan and Christi’s house along with their daughters.

On the trip I found that sometimes facing your fears is worth it. Being welcomed into the family with everyone now is a blessing. And so is good Chinese food after a terifying bridge.
