It has been a rough year for crops in the county this year, even irrigated crops have struggled. Peanut acreage in the county, while nowhere near historic levels, is holding about the same year in year out.
With drought and high input cost, it seems to be hard to make a living growing anything these days, but peanuts can still be a very viable crop for local producers.
To support agriculture producers and agriculture businesses, the Comanche County Agents office and our good co-operators have extensive variety research trials for peanuts in the county.
This year we added a set of “Diesel Nut” trials to the mix. Diesel nuts are being promoted as a potential new energy crop for producers in the area- we will see.
We will be hosting a field day to view these trials and talk with some excellent specialist and producers about varieties, growing conditions and challenges, disease and insect issues, and a plethora of other topics that would be of interest to all ag producers.
The field day will be held on Friday, October 6th, beginning at 10:00 AM and running to approximately 1 p.m. This year’s trials are located at Todd Deman’s Farm.
To get to the trials go to Lamkin, TX and take CR 382 to the left coming from Gustine off HWY 36.
Take a left at the Leon River Bridge, go 2 more miles until 382 turns into 390, and you will be there- watch for a sign at the entrance. There will be 2 CEU’s- 1 IPM, and 1 general offered at the field day and lunch will be provided by our great local sponsors.
Please call the office at: 325-356-2539 if you have questions or would like more information.
