In case you didn’t turn on a phone, TV or computer in the last week, the 95th Academy Awards was this past Sunday.

Wyndi and I had actually watched many of the nominees in animation, acting and writing/ directing with a friend this year, so we ended up watching the ceremony.

I actually didn’t get angry about any of the winners even though I would have picked some categories differently.

I was one of the many positive weirdos that was excited for “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” to be nominated but I was shocked by it winning best picture and the six other categories it took.

For those who haven’t seen or maybe even heard of it, it’s a movie about a laundromat owner who becomes unstuck in the universe while being audited by the IRS and tuning into other versions of herself that are changed by having made different choices in her past. She ends up fighting her daughter from another universe, who is bent on ending all existence.

The movie features several moments of philosphical and family drama but also some vulgar sight gags, weird jokes, hyperactive editing, martial arts, sci-fi gadgets and a two-and-ahalf hour run time. Its title is very appropriate.

I don’t recommend it for everyone, and I’ve already been seeing the backlash from people who don’t understand why it was nominated.

The movie is very high-concept and I understand people having a hard time getting into it, but that’s the beauty of there being so many movies and stories. Everyone is guaranteed to find something that speaks to them. For Wyndi, it was “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” which takes the story of a little shell creature living in an Airbnb after his family was taken and makes it universal with themes that are very relatable.

The nomination for best animated feature made the movie even more enticing after she saw the trailer.

When the Oscars come around, people complain about their favorite movies not winning or even getting nominated. I consider that the best part of any award event, people start discussing the things they liked or that moved them. In that way, the conversation opens up for every movie, not just the ones that got picked by a select group as the best.
