The Dublin Public Library Book Club has chosen “Good Omens” as the last selection for the 2020 meetings. That gathering will be at 1 p.m. on December 5 via Zoom.

At the October meeting the slate for the 2021 books was tentatively put together by those present. Readers had been asked to have some suggestions ready and a diverse, compelling lineup was created.

There are many ways to read “Good Omens” free of charge. It can be checked out from the library in hard copy or audio. Another option is to use the libby app through the library and North Texas Libraries on the Go; download to a reader or as an audio book.

“Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch”

By Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

The novel has been called a farce—“an absurd event” or “an improbable broadly satirical comedy.” It is certainly wacky, preposterous, and ludicrous.

An angel and demon set about to sabotage the coming of the end times. A baby mix-up at the hospital sends the Antichrist child to the wrong family, in the wrong village. More subplots add to the ridiculous situation.

Originally written in 1990, many versions have played out in radio, television, and most recently on Prime Video. It was written because the writers needed the money and as it turned out they simply “fed on each other.”

The book club has very much enjoyed the Zoom format and some interesting and lively discussions have taken place. This story promises to offer much to talk about.

“How to Astronaut: Everything You Need to Know Before Leaving Earth”

By Terry Virts

A complete behind-the-scenes look at training, the basic rules, lessons, and procedures of space travel. Through 50 short chapters learn how to deal with a corpse while in space, what it is like to film an IMAX movie in orbit and when nature calls? What then?

In our current surreal environment, knowing how to navigate in outer space could open doors to a whole new realm of interest. Those of us who remember those early days of space travel might find this particularly interesting. There is nothing like getting a first-hand account.

“Grace in High Heels: Real-Life Reflections of Humor, Hope and Healing”

By Shannon Perry

The marketing for this book bills it as advice for, “Raggedy Ann in a Barbie Doll world.” That seems quite fitting for where we find ourselves. Revealing embarrassing, amusing, and sometimes dangerous adventures from her own life, Perry recommends this for women who aren’t perfect and can’t hide it.

“The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy”

By Valerie Ann Worwood

A great recipe book for essential oil treatments, the library offers an opportunity to try this very complete volume before purchasing. The first publication of the book was 25 years ago.

As time has passed the use of essential oil has become increasingly recognized as researchers throughout the world have learned more and more about their unique properties and uses.

Having had a personal copy Worwood’s book for several years, it is filled with charts, pictures, a very complete index and is user friendly. Take the liberty of trying out some of these remedies.
