November is National Gratitude Month. Embracing gratitude can shift focus from negative to positive. Decreasing stress, lowering blood pressure, and experiencing more successful business and personal relationships are also results. In this month of thanksgiving, practice gratitude by choosing positive books, magazines, and movies.

IN THE STACKS

“Everything Beautiful in Its Time: Seasons of Love and Loss”

By Jenna Bush Hager

Hager and her twin sister have garnered considerable time in the spotlight. During the Bush 41 presidency the first grandchildren were often seen, and much family time recorded for the world to see.

Back in Midland, Texas another set of grandparents lived a quiet, everyday life. This book reflects on both sets of grandparents and the special influences of both are explored.

What a great book to exemplify gratitude for the power of family and the amazing anecdotes and lessons learned from these four members of “America’s Greatest Generation.”

“Think Like a Monk: Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day”

By Jay Shetty

In Shetty’s family there were three career choices: doctor, lawyer, or failure. His family was horrified when he graduated from college and headed to India to become a monk.

After three years he was told he would have more impact on the world to share his experience and wisdom with others. With huge debt and no marketable skills, he moved back home to his parents’ and began reconnecting with old friends.

So many of them were experiencing so much stress, pressure, and unhappiness they asked Shetty to coach them on well-being and mindfulness. Thus, began his path of being a grand influencer. These are just a few ideas from the book:

■ Overcome negativity

■ Stop overthinking

■ Comparison kills love

■ Kindness is crucial

■ Find happiness by looking for it

“Anxious People”

By Fredrik Backman

This is comedy about a crime that never took place. The would-be robber disappears leaving behind eight very anxious strangers who have more in common than they could ever have imagined.

As this situation escalates the “robber” must decide which is worse—go out and face the police that this was all a farce or stay trapped with this group of impossible people? A funny concept and unique plot twist.

Many grandparents and other assorted relatives, etc. may find themselves now in the role of caregiver for small children. What to do?
