Peanut Field Day and Cattle Gathering

If you like seeing a good peanut crop, do not forget we will be holding the peanut field day again this year.

It has been a good year for crops in the county so far this year. Peanut acreage in the county is nowhere near historic levels, but peanuts are still an important crop for local producers. Prices for peanuts is poor, that coupled high inputs make it even harder to breakeven, but most crops are suffering the same fate and peanut prices are better than some crops.

To support agriculture producers and agriculture businesses in the area, Texas A&M Peanut specialists, Comanche County Agents office and our good cooperator Mark Allison have an excellent set of research trials for peanuts.

We will be hosting a field day to view these trials and talk with some excellent specialists and producers about varieties, growing conditions and challenges, disease and insect issues and other topics that will be of interest to all ag producers.

The field day will be held this Thursday, September 5th, beginning at 10 a.m. and running to approximately 2 p.m.

The field day will be held at the Mark Allison Farm, 1221 County Road 340, follow the signs when you get there.

There will be 2 IPM CEU’s will be offered offered at the field day and lunch will be sponsored by our great local sponsors. This is a field day, so bring a lawn chair if you don’t like to stand for very long.

This is always an excellent field day with the opportunity to see up close and first-hand variety and agronomic research that is applicable to our growing conditions.

Cattle Gathering Beef Program

This is going to be an excellent cattle program covering some topics that should be at the top of the radar for all local beef producers.

The topics will include beef cattle market and what the expectations might be for the market.

Beef cattle nutrition and hay quality affects on nutrient requirements. New World Screwworm, this topic should probably be on the top of everyone’s list of concerns. We will talk about how it got here, what the potential damage it might have on the cattle herd. Hopefully by then we might be able to discuss some control and treatment options.

The program will be Thursday, October 30th at The Station FNB in Dublin. It will begin at 10 and run until around 2. We will offer 1 IPM CEU and we will have a good meal provided by our local sponsors. Be sure to get this one on your calendar.
