Lions outscore Venus in scrimmage

The Lions outscored Venus 4-0 during the timed portion of their scrimmage on Friday.

Coach Bob Cervetto called it one of the best first scrimmages the team has ever played.

“Even if a kid made a mistake, he was going full speed,” Cervetto said.

He said his kids were focused and kept the tempo up, which allowed them to break away and score on each possession.

Cervetto was pleased with Blake Porter’s good catch in the game and the efforts of the offensive line keeping pressure on Venus’ defenders.

He commended the defense for paying aggressively and keeping the opponent scoreless.

Cervetto said the kids were excited to play because they knew they were prepared and in good shape after summer conditioning.

“We probably could have gone another two quarters,” he said.

Next week the team will scrimmage Clyde at home in the annual Our Day to Shine scrimmage.

Cervetto said it will be a better test of the Lions training because the bulldogs are a more athletic team than Venus.

All teams will be home and Cervetto said a few kids will get to play in more than one game.

“The kids are loving to play and that’s why they work their tail end off,” Cervetto said.

Ticket proceeds from Friday will benefit coaches and players with disabilities through the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation benevolence fund.

Varsity kickoff is at 7 p.m.
