Dubliner dies in Comanche wreck, fundraiser set

Dubliner Jonathan Alejandro Escamilla, 20, was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Jan. 2 in Comanche County.

According to a DPS report, Escamilla was driving in a 2014 Ford Mustang with passenger Manuel Jose Escamilla when they stopped at the intersection of FM1702 and U.S. 36, four miles east of Gustine. The vehicle pulled onto U.S. 36 where it was struck by a 2016 freightliner truck, towing a trailer, driven by Aaron Durell Spencer, 27, of Copperas Cove, who was traveling east.

Following impact, both vehicles went off the road into the north drainage ditch.

Jonathan Escamilla was pronounced dead at the scene while Manuel Escamilla was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth with critical injuries. Spencer was treated and released.

The crash is currently under investigation.

A fundraiser is being held Sunday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the City Café in Gustine to benefit the Escamilla family, as well as the families of Pena, McDearmon and McMillion, who are also going through hardships. The event will feature a dinner of fried fish, French fries, beans, hushpuppies and homemade desserts. There will also be an auction and live music. All proceeds will benefit the four families.
